dpdownloader

X profile picture downloader

X serves avatars at 200 pixels in the timeline. The original upload is still on its CDN, and this pulls that version instead.

Choose a platform

How it works

  1. An X profile with the handle highlighted in the browser address bar
    1

    Find the handle

The handle is the name after x.com in the address bar. The @ symbol is optional here.

  2. An X handle typed into the dpdownloader box next to the Get picture button
    2

    Paste it in the box

Enter the handle and press Get picture. Old twitter.com links work as well as x.com ones.

  3. The retrieved X profile picture shown at original size with a download button
    3

    Save the file

The avatar appears at the largest size X stores. Press Download to keep it.

A size comparison for X profile pictures: the 200-pixel timeline thumbnail beside the 400-pixel uncompressed original
The timeline shows 200 pixels. Stripping the size suffix gives 400.

What size you actually get

X keeps every avatar in several sizes and serves a small one in the timeline. The largest is the file exactly as it was uploaded, with no reduction applied, and that is what this tool asks for.

Measured on a real account, the difference is large. The timeline version came back at 7 KB and the medium one at 21 KB, while the untouched upload was 25 KB, roughly three and a half times the timeline version. Each candidate is checked against the server before you are offered a link.

Shown in the timeline7 KB
Medium size21 KB
Original upload (what you get here)25 KB

An honest ceiling. X caps avatars at 400 by 400 pixels during upload, so "original" here means the uncompressed 400-pixel file rather than something dramatically larger. Any tool promising a 1000-pixel X avatar is either upscaling it afterwards or describing a different platform.

Handles change, accounts do not

An X handle can be changed at any time, and the old one becomes available for someone else to claim. That has two consequences. A lookup on an old handle may return nothing, or it may return a completely different person who has since taken the name.

Opening the profile and copying the handle from the address bar is the reliable fix. If you are checking whether an account is genuine, compare the numeric account ID rather than the handle, since only the ID is permanent.

Protected accounts

Avatars on protected accounts stay publicly visible. Protection covers posts, not the profile picture, which is why a locked account still shows a picture to people who do not follow it. When a lookup on a protected account fails, a stale handle is the usual cause rather than the privacy setting.

Header images are separate

The wide banner behind the top of a profile is a different image with a different shape, stored separately. This tool handles the round avatar only.

Saving the file on your device

iPhone. Download opens the image in Safari. Long press it and choose Add to Photos.

Android. The file goes to your Downloads folder and appears in your gallery.

Desktop. Right click Download and choose Save link as to rename it first.

When a lookup fails

The handle changed or the account was renamed. Copy the current one from the address bar.

The account is suspended or deleted. Nothing public remains.

The account never set a picture. X shows a generated grey placeholder, which is drawn rather than stored.

Using the picture afterwards

Profile photographs are usually copyrighted by whoever took them. Saving one for personal reference is ordinary use. Adopting someone else's avatar as your own can mislead people and breaches X's rules on impersonation, which are enforced against accounts rather than individual images.

Common questions

Does it work for Twitter links as well as X links?

Yes. Old twitter.com URLs still point at the same accounts, so either domain works, as does the bare handle.

What is the largest size available for an X avatar?

Four hundred pixels square. X resizes avatars during upload, so nothing larger is stored no matter which tool you use.

Can I download the header image too?

Not with this tool. The header is a separate, differently shaped image and is not part of the profile picture lookup.

Will the account owner see anything?

No. There is no view notification on X, and the request never touches your account or theirs.

Why does a handle that worked yesterday fail today?

The account probably changed handle, was suspended, or was deleted. Open the profile and copy the current handle from the address bar.

Can I look up an account by its numeric ID?

Not here. This tool works with handles. The numeric ID is useful for confirming an account is the same one over time, but it is not accepted as input.

Does this work for protected accounts?

Yes. Protection hides posts, not the profile picture, so the avatar remains publicly visible.
