Public usernames only

This is the one real limitation, and it is worth understanding before you try. Telegram publishes a preview page only for accounts that have set a public username, the @name that produces a t.me/name link. Most channels and groups have one. Many personal accounts do not.

If someone has no public username there is no public page, and no tool can retrieve their photo. Seeing a picture inside a private chat does not make it publicly available, and any site claiming to reach those photos is either guessing or lying.

Users, channels and groups behave the same

Telegram treats all three identically for previews, so a channel logo, a group icon and a personal profile photo are retrieved the same way. You do not need to say which type you are looking up.

One difference worth knowing: channels and groups almost always have a public username because that is how people join them, which is why lookups for channels succeed far more often than lookups for individuals.

One size, and why that is fine

Unlike YouTube or X, Telegram does not expose a size parameter you can raise. The preview page links to a single file, and that file is already the full stored copy rather than a thumbnail. Nothing larger is being withheld, so there is no upgrade step to perform and no quality left on the table.

Telegram photo links expire. The address Telegram publishes is time limited. That is why the download here is served through this site rather than as a direct link: by the time you shared a raw Telegram URL with someone, it would often already be dead.

What you can paste

  • A bare username, as in durov
  • With the @ symbol, as in @durov
  • A full link, as in t.me/durov or https://t.me/durov
  • Web client links such as web.telegram.org/k/#@durov. Copy just the username from these.

Invite links of the form t.me/joinchat/... or t.me/+AbCdEf will not work. Those point at private groups, which have no public preview page by design.

Saving the file on your device

iPhone. Download opens the photo in Safari. Long press it and choose Add to Photos.

Android. The file saves to Downloads and appears in your gallery.

Desktop. Right click Download and choose Save link as to rename it first.

When nothing comes back

No public username. The most common reason by a wide margin, especially for personal accounts.

A typing mistake. Telegram usernames allow underscores, which are easy to miss or to confuse with a space when copying from a message.

No photo set. Telegram then shows a coloured circle with initials, drawn by the app rather than stored as a file.

The account was deleted. Deleted accounts release their username, so a lookup may return nothing or, later, somebody else entirely.

Using the picture afterwards

The photo belongs to whoever created it. Saving one for personal reference, or to confirm that a channel is the one you expected before joining it, is ordinary use. Reusing it as your own or publishing it elsewhere is a separate question and can infringe copyright.

Common questions

Can I download the profile photo of someone in my contacts?

Only if they have set a public @username. Seeing a photo inside your chat does not make it publicly retrievable, and Telegram does not expose photos for accounts without a public username.

Does it work for channels and groups?

Yes. Public channels and groups work exactly like user accounts.

Will the person or channel admin be notified?

No. Reading a public preview page leaves no trace on the account and generates no notification.

Can I get older profile photos, not just the current one?

No. The public preview shows only the current photo. Earlier ones are visible in the app to people who can open the profile, but they are not published publicly.

Do I need a Telegram account?

No. The preview pages are open to anyone with a browser.

Why does a t.me/+ link not work?

Those are private invite links. Private groups have no public preview page, so there is nothing to read.

Is the downloaded photo the same one shown in the app?

Yes, and usually at a larger size, since the app displays a scaled copy.
